Today is Independence Day for Zimbabwe!
According to Global Road Warrior
The British gained a firm foothold in the territory (formerly known as Rhodesia) after the British South Africa Company established a settlement in Salisbury (now Harare) in 1890. Southern Rhodesia declared its independence from Great Britain in 1965 and became a republic in 1970. Nonetheless, the country remained under a conservative, white minority government. With economic sanctions and growing discontent within the black majority, the government consented to multi-racial elections won by Robert Mugabe. On April 18, 1980, following a century of British rule, and under the new name, Zimbabwe declared its independence.
