How to Install Antietam and South Mountain

The South Mountain patch for Antietam adds several new terrain features to Antietam:

Railroads
Walled roads
Six (6) additional elevation codes
Special buildings

Unfortunately, it also deletes the ability of the BattlePack designer to specify map sizes, or control the placement of normal buildings. This prohibits it from working properly with most of the BattlePacks.

Many Antietam players have chosen to uninstall South Mountain, or to install Antietam without South Mountain in one directory, and install Antietam with South Mountain into a second directory.

There is a better solution; that is, install Antietam without South Mountain and Antietam with South Mountain into the same directory. There are three advantages to doing this:

Antietam without South Mountain gains support for railroads, walled roads and the six additional elevation codes. This provides the BattlePack designer with additional options, and makes it possible to create more battles that require one or more of these features.

It saves about 100 megabytes of disk space.

If you have favorite art work, such as new uniforms or flags, or new sound files, you only have to install them once.

Here are the step by step instructions to install Antietam without South Mountain and Antietam with South Mountain into the same directory.

Step 1: Print these instruction.

Step 2: Get organized. You will need a copy of the Antietam beta patch and the South Mountain patch. You should also have a copy of Larry Hookin's SMA File Utility. I created a temporary folder on my desktop to store these programs, along with the zipped copies of the various Battlepacks and revised art work that I like. This keeps everything in one place.

Step 3: Uninstall South Mountain, using Add-Remove Programs.

Step 4: Uninstall Antietam, using Add-Remove Programs.

Step 5: Go to the old Antietam directory, and make sure nothing remains. You may find some favorite art files or sound files there. Copy them to your temporary folder from step 2, and then delete anything and everything you find. You want to totally remove C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Antietam, and all of its subfolders and directories.

Step 6: Insert the Antietam or Collections CD. Select Install. I changed the installation directory to C:\SMA, but you can use any directory you choose. Install the program.

Step 7: Install the Antietam beta patch. If you didn't install Antietam into the default directory, you will have to enter the address of the Antietam directory, such as C:\SMA.

Step 8: Open up the new Antietam directory. Find the Antietam.exe file (it will probably just display as Antietam, with a picture of Lee and Meade). Right click on that file and choose copy. Now paste the copy. The name should read Copy of Antietam. Right click on the copy, choose rename, and change the name to SMA.

Step 9: Now comes the only tricky step. Right click on the Start button in the lower left corner of your screen. Choose Open, Programs, Firaxis Games, Sid Meier's Antietam. Find the Antietam shortcut. Right click on that file and choose copy. Now paste the copy. Rename the copy to SMA. Next, right click on the SMA shortcut, choose Properties, Shortcut. Change the word Antietam to SMA on the Target line. Choose apply, and then OK.

Step 10: Install South Mountain. By default, it will install itself to wherever you installed Antietam.

Step 11: Open up the Antietam directory. Select all of the files. Right click on one of them, choose properties, and uncheck the read-only box. Select apply, and then ok. Then, create a new folder named File Utility.

Step 12: Open up the File Utility directory. Unzip a copy of Larry Hookin's SMA File Utility into this directory.

Step 13: While you are in the File Utility directory, create folders for your various BattlePacks, such as SMG2, Olustee, or Battery Wagner. Open up each of those folders and unzip the proper files into them. You should also create folders for your favorite flags, uniforms and sound files.

Step 14: You're done!

Step 15: Clean up after yourself. I recommend that you keep the patches, BattlePacks, and zipped artwork in one place. You may already have a safe place to keep them. If so, delete the temporary directory you created in step 2. If not, keep this directory, but you may want to move it to the Antietam directory, so it doesn't clutter up your desktop.

Step 16: Use the SMA File Utility to install a BattlePack for SMA. Be sure to restore the original files before you install a different BattlePack. Added 11/26/00: Also, be sure to restore the original files before you play Antietam or South Mountain.

Revised 11/26/00: The shortcuts available from your Start menu now point to SMA, Antietam, and South Mountain. Use SMA to play the various BattlePacks or Antietam with the beta patch; use the Sid Meier's Antietam shortcut to play Antietam with the South Mountain patch; and use the South Mountain shortcut to play South Mountain.

Added 11/26/00: One caution. The original Antietam does not recognize the "Preferences" command on the startup screen. South Mountain installs the copyright 2000 Antietam startup screen, and this screen does contain the "Preferences" command. If you use the SMA shortcut to start the game, ignore this "Preferences" command - it doesn't work. If you use the Antietam or South Mountain shortcut to start the game, then the "Preferences" command functions normally.
